On a Roll: Sausages, Lobster and Balsamic Gelato – Here’s What’s Popping Up – LA Weekly Asia

Strings of Life chef Monty Koludrovic is bringing a taste of international flavors to Los Angeles wrapped in a roll. Collaborating with some of the L.A.s’ top culinary talent, the “Sausage Roll World Tour” puts a fun spin on the Australian pastry classic with a featured chef roll that will hit the pastry shelves each week. The Sausage Rolls (all priced at $10) will be available for pick-up and take-out on a first-come, first-serve basis with limited quantities available at the café.

The tour kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 3 with chef Nancy Silverton’s Italian take on the humble Australian Sausage Roll – a Calabrian lamb sausage roll.  Other chef collaborators include Mei-Lin from Nightshade (who will be whipping up a truffled cheeseburger roll,)  Zen Ong from Inda  and Sabel Braganza (E.P. & L.P.).

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, Santa Monica Pier seafood staple The Albright will launch its packaged roll boxes combining three rolls. Mix and match between a lobster roll, crab roll and shrimp roll. Every box automatically comes with house-made potato chips doused in Old Bay Seasoning. The Roll Box is available for delivery via GrubHub, ChowNow, Postmates, DoorDash and through The Albright’s app.

National Gyro Day is on Sept. 1st, and  Daphne’s is  celebrating by offering their classic pita with gyro for $5 on Tuesday. Gyro, a traditional Mediterranean meat known for its rotating cooking technique is stuffed into the classic pita which is served with cucumber-tomato salad, red onion, lettuce, Greek dressing and tzatziki.

For dessert, wrap it up in a cone: The Consortium of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (Aceto Balsamico di Modena) has teamed up with heritage gelateria Gelato-Go to develop a new, limited-edition gelato flavor that highlights the European export’s versatility. The bright, acidic and unconventional flavor is on menus at both the Hollywood and Beverly Hills locations until Sunday, August 30th.

What’s Popping Up is a weekly column in the LA Weekly that explores all that’s new in food and drink.
